Getting there:

IcelandAir

Accommodations (with links):

Airbnb (Vík) / 1 night

Airbnb (Höfn) / 1 night

Airbnb (Vík) / 1 night

Loft Hostel (Reykjavík) / 1 night

Getting around:

Jeep Renegade Rental from Green Motion

Tips:

  • You can travel a whole trip without touching Iceland currency - everywhere accepted chip enabled card

  • Car insurance helps make a worry free mindset with Iceland's unpredictable weather

  • maps.me provided offline maps that also served as our GPS

  • SIM cards can be purchased conveniently at gas stations

Day 1:

After we picked up our rental, the day immediately started with a 10am snorkel tour at Silfra. I droned a little around Þingvellir National Park and headed back to Reykjavík. We had a Northern Lights tour planned, but got rescheduled the next night due to cloudy skies.

Day 2:

This was probably one of the best Iceland days. Started with a "private" buggy tour (we were the only ones to sign up for the 10am tour), headed the Golden Circle where we happen to run into horses. The day finally ended with our first glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Day 3:

This day's agenda was to head Vík, with 2 stops on the way - stopping at Seljalandsfoss first. We then made a bold decision to hike to Seljavallalaug at sundown. This is where I was truly blown away with the Sony A7S - such an amazing low-light camera. Once we arrived at our Airbnb, I was amazed by the stars - but seriously, look at the end result time-lapse.

Day 4:

We headed to Dyrhólaey first thing in the morning and caught the sunrise. After some droning, time-lapses, and photos we headed to the DC 3 plane wreckage - roughly a 4K walk. Thanks to the magic of social media and a little of off-road driving, we found Hjörleifshöfði - a really badass cave. We attempted to head to Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, where I've actually had dreams of droning but unfortunately it got too dark with the early sunset. Fast forward to the night, we attempted to find the Northern Lights on our own - with great success! I set up a time-lapse of the northern lights and the result was amazing.

Day 5:

Before heading back to Vík, we made some stops along the way. We booked an Ice Cave Tour inside Iceland's most amazing glacier: Vatnajökull. After a few hours in the cave, we headed Jökulsárlón (glacier lagoon) along with Iceland's diamond beach. Ended the day with a hike Svartifoss & a revisit to Fjaðrárgljúfur.

Day 6:

With our last full day, we headed towards Reykjavík making a few stops on the way again. First thing in the morning, we headed to Black Sand Beach where we were blasted with intense winds and left with souvenirs of black sand in our pockets. We then headed to Skógafoss, where I had a short-lived droning session due to the high winds. We had to end up cancelling a hike to Reykjadalur - a 7km total hike with rewarding natural hot springs - due to the weather again (and I was freezing from getting soaked at Black Sand Beach). The rest of the day involved a pitstop to a field of wild Icelandic horses, a successful Geocaching day and a MUST stop at Taco Bell (well, a must stop for us).

Day 7:

Our last day ended with just roaming the streats of Reykjavík, up until until we caught our flight that evening.

I would say I was really fortunate in doing 99% of what I planned in Iceland (missing on the Blue Lagoon and a hike to Reykjadalur). Given that we only explored 1/2 of the Ring Road - I'm sure I'll hit these two with my next visit. 👌
